Like any other difficulty rpg, you defeat difficulties to get swords, and use those swords to defeat stronger difficulties. You can get levels to unlock armor to boost your health, walk speed, and jump height. Levels also are used to unlock certain areas (although some of them also require swords), and also to flex on your friends and to be on the leaderboard. Gold can be used to buy certain items in the shop. Will you be the best of the best and conquer every difficulty there is?
